Dr Ilham Al-Jamas, a highly experienced lecturer

At one of the key milestones in the history of the Faculty of Medicine – University of Nineveh, following the liberation of Mosul and the Faculty’s return to its original location, the experienced Professor Dr Ilham Khattab al-Jamas assumed the deanship of the Faculty for the 2018–2019 academic year, a period marked by the reorganisation of academic and administrative work and the restoration of university life following years of displacement and exceptional circumstances.

Dr Elham graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Mosul in 1973, and went on to pursue her academic career in a number of specialisms; She obtained a Higher Diploma in Psychiatry in 1980 from the Maudsley Institute in the UK, a Diploma in Neurology in 1983 from the University of London, and went on to earn a PhD in Community Medicine in 1996

Throughout her academic career, she has published more than 30 scientific papers, supervised more than 15 doctoral theses and 25 master’s theses, and participated in more than 25 Arab and international conferences, in addition to authoring three books on the harmful effects of smoking, the human genome, and the genome and psychiatry.

She has also played a prominent role in community service; among her most notable initiatives is the establishment of a rehabilitation centre for children with autism at the Mosul Faculty of Medicine, alongside numerous activities and projects in the fields of mental health and community awareness.

Throughout her career, she has held a number of academic and administrative posts, including Director of the Centre for the Development of Medical Education, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Nineveh, and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, before assuming the role of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Nineveh for the period 2018–2019.

Her tenure remains one of the key milestones in the college’s revival following liberation; a phase that was not merely an administrative transition, but a return to its home, a reclaiming of its identity, and the beginning of a new chapter in the history of medicine in Nineveh.
